Brief Description

The mission of the College of Education and Rehabilitation is to increase the quantity and improve the quality of professionals who provide services to individuals with visual impairment and who assume leadership in education and rehabilitation worldwide. The College of Education and Rehabilitation prepares a variety of professionals to work with people who are visually impaired. These programs include the:
* Master of Science and Certificate in Low Vision Rehabilitation
* Master of Science and Certificate in Orientation and Mobility
* Master of Science and Certificate in Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (formerly Rehabilitation Teaching)
* Master of Education and Certificate in Education of Children and Youth with Visual and Multiple Impairments.
Students may earn a masters' degree in one area and additional certificate(s) in one or more other disciplines. Graduate studies offers distance education and on-campus learning opportunities for masters' degrees and certificates.
All programs, with the exception of the full-time Masters Degree in Orientation and Mobility, are now available through distance education. All distance education masters degrees require a summer on-campus residency program to facilitate hands-on experience and simulation work wearing simulators or blindfolds. In addition, there are O&M, low vision and education programs being offered in blended formats with distance education coursework and face-to-face classes on weekends during the academic year and summers on site in many states. States with which Salus-CER has contracts vary. Presently, Salus blended course programs exist in Tennessee, Maryland, Georgia, and Minnesota. The College encompasses a rich mixture of online, face-to-face, clinical, research, case study, and field-based learning geared toward meeting professional preparation needs in the field of vision impairment.
The department also offers many professional development opportunities in the form of continuing education courses and programs.

Services Offered

  • Personnel Preparation
    • Master's and certificate programs in orientation and mobility, vision rehabilitation teaching, low vision rehabilitation, and education of children with visual impairments.

  • Assessment
    • Performs assessments through the Community Rehabilitation Service Program. Performs comprehensive assessments of students and adults as requested by other organizations and agencies. Also direct Philadelphia Prevention of Blindness Program.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Offers assistive technology training.

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Consults in the areas of education, rehabilitation, orientation and mobility, and low vision rehabilitation. Services provided through Community Rehabilitation Service Program.

  • Counseling
    • Social service staff at the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center at The Eye Institute of the PA College of Optometry available to assist clients and their families.

  • Low Vision Services
    • Provides low vision evaluation and follow-up services to individuals across the lifespan. Prescribes and supplies low vision devices.

  • Professional Training
    • Continuing education provided on a contracted basis with hours applicable for professional development.

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provided through Community Rehabilitation Service Program and the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center at The Eye Institute of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

  • Support Groups
    • Older Adult Support Group meets monthly.

  • Distance Education
    • All programs, with the exception of the full-time Masters degree in Orientation and Mobility, are now available through distance education.
