Brief Description

Friedman Place offers a safe, supportive and vibrant community where seniors and other adults with visual impairment can live independently and hassle-free. Established in 2004, we are one of the largest residential communities for the blind in the country and as such, are able to offer a wide array of services and resources to our residents.

Friedman Place is a non-profit Supportive Living Community for blind and visually impaired adults in Chicago. Our building has been designed with the needs of the blind and visually impaired in mind. Each resident has a private studio or one-bedroom apartment, with a kitchenette and bathroom. A full range of services and activities is provided so that residents' days are healthy, dignified, and stimulating.

Services Offered

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides referrals for physical, occupational and speech therapy.

  • Recreation Services
    • Provides recreational and educational activities to adults with vision problems throughout Metropolitan Chicago. Facilities include weaving workshop, computer center, and exercise room.

  • Library Services
    • Maintains a library with large print, braille and audio books.

  • Health
    • Has a staff of licensed nurses who dispense medicine and monitor chronic health conditions and certified nurse assistants who are on duty 24 hours a day.

  • Housing Services
    • Offers housing for people with vision problems in studio or one-bedroom apartments with full bathrooms and kitchenettes.

  • Low Vision Services
    • Maintains a low-vision clinic on the premises run by the Illinois Eye Institute.

  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Offers braille instruction.

  • Counseling
    • Offers counseling services.

  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Information and Referral Service to community resources for adults who are visually impaired. Limited Counseling is offered.
