Brief Description

The mission of the Center for Deaf-Blind Persons is to provide the services needed to minimize the effects of combined vision and hearing loss upon the individual and family. The Center helps each person with a dual sensory loss to develop skills, achieve goals, and regain the highest level of activity possible when participating in meaningful work or leisure activities.

Information and Referral: The Center provides information and referral in response to questions related to deaf-blindness, such as:
Communication access
Interpreter services
Sign language training
Telephone relay services
Assistive technology resources and purchasing information

Services Offered

  • Assessment
    • Conducts comprehensive assessment to determine the individual’s current skill levels, needs, and interests.

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Provides basic, intermediate, and advanced computer skills instruction using large print access, screenreaders, and/or braille display access.

  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Provides orientation and mobility training.

  • Support Groups
    • Offers self-help support groups for individuals and their families.

  • Information and Referral
    • Provides information and referral in response to questions related to deaf-blindness, such as communication access, interpreter services, sign language training, telephone relay services, assistive technology resources and purchasing information, information on civil rights laws and other legal issues, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, and community programs available to consumers.

  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Training Areas

      Adaptive Independent Living: cooking, cleaning, wardrobe management, leisure/tactile sensitivity/fine motor skills development, and orientation and mobility

      Alternative Communication: touch sign language, braille, raised alphabet cards, print-on-palm, and braille-to-print devices

      Other Services: monthly social group, older adult presentations and services, and community support service providers

  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers the following services to obtain or maintain a job:
      • Soft Skills Development
      • Job Development/Placement
      • Job Coaching
      • Follow-up

  • Recreation Services
    • Provides opportunities for creative expression and productive ways to use the hours that may formerly have been spent watching television or listening to the radio.

  • Assistive Products
    • iCanConnect services: Provides equipment and training to people with significant combined hearing and vision loss so they can stay connected to friends and family. Sending email or chatting on the phone can be difficult without access to the right equipment. iCanConnect puts that technology into hands of these individuals to enhance their independence.
