Activity: Online Job Application

Key Considerations

Job applications are used by employers to screen potential employees and to decide which applicant to contact for a job interview. Your application can make the difference in whether you get hired or not. Therefore, there are some important things you should keep in mind as you complete your job application.

If you are completing a paper based application blue or black ink is preferred over red ink or a pencil. Your handwriting should be legible or you risk your application being rejected. A good way to demonstrate to an employer you follow directions is to complete all parts of the application. If a question or section does not apply to you simply put “N/A” which means not applicable. Because your job application is a reflection of you, you should not bend or fold your application, and you will want to review it for spelling and grammar errors. If you make a mistake while completing your application, a small amount of white out is acceptable. However, if you need to correct more than two mistakes, you may want to consider starting over with a blank application.

Complete the job application honestly and accurately. Once you submit your application, you may be called to come in for an interview. The phone number you put on your application should be correct, but most importantly, the message greeting in your voicemail should be updated to reflect a professional young adult. Using your personal data sheet and/or resume while you are completing the job application will make the process more efficient and help ensure you include accurate information.

If you are applying for a job which requires you to submit an online job application, you want to be sure the application is accessible to you. Some employers require applicants to complete the online job application at the place of employment. In this case, you may want to consider taking someone with you who can enter the data into the online job application for you as you provide the information from your personal data sheet or resume. If you are able to access the online job application independently, keep in mind you may be required to complete the application in its entirety once you start the process, so be sure you have allotted time to do so or otherwise you may end up submitting an incomplete application.
